I use my strat most of the time and live on the neck pickup, and would listen to and try to emulate (badly) artists such as Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, a lot of John Mayer, Mark Knopfler, SRV, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Clapton etc. At the moment I have a Vox Valvetronix and while it does the job well enough I'm looking to find my sound and I think I know what I like in general. I like Marshall crunch at times but the Fender I find stays a bit cleaner because of the EL84 tubes while still having the nice British voicing.I've been looking to upgrade my amp for a while and have narrowed my selection down to these 3. The thing I like about the Fender is I loved how the overdriven sound and I also liked that it didn't distort chords as bad as most Marshalls that I've tried, I like being able to hear notes in my arpeggios. I unfortunately didn't have time to test it but I have heard a lot good about 2018 DSL range, the last time I used the DSL it got really fizzy but they've since fixed that with the new speaker I've read/heard. I also looked at the Marshall DSL40CR (2018 model) and it also seemed really good but I'm thinking it might be too much? Its only $100 more than the Bassbreaker 15 where I live.
I spend a lot of time experimenting with my gear basically and seeing how far it goes. I find with most amps it takes me a few weeks or even months to really get a true 'feel' for it overall. The other thing is, I only tested it for 10 minutes and didn't really spend as much time as I want with it. I've read some people online saying its gig worthy, others saying it isn't because of the lower headroom (15W.) Problem is at my store, I only tested it in a sound proof room which all though lets me hear the amp well, I don't know how it would be in a gig scenario. To me when I tested it in store, it seemed like an amp I could use at home more easily than most tube amps I've tested.
I like how it has selectable gain staging and the simple looks controls and how responsive the EQ and volume is. I'm looking to buy my 1st tube amp and really interested in the Fender Bassbreaker.
